On Saturday evening, at the 1st Annual Battle at the Bay Showcase hosted by Port Jeff, the Bears topped the Royals in the nightcap of the three-game exhibition, 65-39. It was the Bears’ 11th straight win over their crosstown rivals, dating back to 2012. The Brook has also won seven straight games on the Port Jeff hardwood with their last loss coming on Jan. 26, 2002.
The Royals, determined to buck their recent trend vs. the Bears, came out firing to build an early 11-3 lead behind three buckets and a 3-pointer. Colin Scanlon followed with a 3-pointer and CJ Edwards added a score as the Bears pulled within three, but the Royals ended the quarter with four straight points to take a 15-8 lead after the first.
The Royals opened a 17-8 lead, their largest of the game, in the opening moments of the second frame, but three straight buckets from Rex Eshirow, Owen Sobel, and Malik Ulysse pulled the Brook back within three. After a Port Jeff free throw, the Bears uncorked a 9-0 run, including six straight from Sobel, to take their first lead at 23-18. They would not trail the rest of the game. Port Jeff notched the last score of the half, but trailed 20-23 at the break.
The Bears began the second half with a 10-1 surge to build a 33-21 advantage and seize control. From there, Sobel matched Port Jeff’s scoring, 8-8, over the remainder of the quarter as the Bears took a 43-29 lead into the final frame. The Royals pulled within 47-34, but the Bears finally KOed their rivals with a 16-0 run, during which seven different Bears scored, as they closed out a 65-39 win.
Sobel led all scorers with 22 points. T.J. Wachter (11), Matt Fajfer (8), Eshirow (6), Edwards (5), Ulysse (4), Brandon Gicquel (4), Scanlon (3), and David Song (2) rounded out the balanced attack.
The Bears take their three-game winning streak into today’s home PSAA match-up vs. Martin Luther.
