On June 16, 2012, senior Taylor Colucci won the Emerging Elite 200 meters at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, NC. Heading into the finals in 6th place after a time of 22.18, Colucci ran a school record time of 21.80 in the finals to best the deep competition. Despite running from the difficult position of lane 7, Colucci edged Jaalen Jones of Maylene, AL by 0.03 seconds for the historic win.
On February 18, 1950, Paul Cuffari became Stony Brook’s first National Champion by finishing 1st in the 12-pound shot put at the National Prep School Track and Field Championships held at Madison Square Garden. Cuffari tossed the metallic sphere 54′ 8″, obliterating the field as the next closest competitor was Bronxville’s Durham Lawshe with a throw of 52′ 3.25″. Though Cuffari fell short of the meet record of 56′ 5.75″, in an exhibition throw after the contest he tossed the shot over 57 feet. Cuffari would go on to a break the shot put record at Grove City College and was inducted into the Stony Brook Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.
