AJ (#11) poses with the squad after the game

In a non-league tilt last night Luke Meyer and Robbie Colarusso dominated both sides of the ball in a 67-44 rout of Port Jeff.

The Bears blitzed the Royals over the opening five minutes in a performance reminiscent of last year’s defensive effort in which the Brook held Port to just 3 points in the first half. Chester Kayonga hit a fadeaway jumper to start the scoring and from there it was the Bears’ defense that fueled the offensive charge. Meyer followed with a steal that led to a Luke O’Connor layup. O’Connor snared a steal of his own on the next possession, culminating in a score by Jyles Etienne. Kayonga scored on another layup then, after another steal by Meyer, he connected on two free throws to push the lead to 10-0. After a shot clock violation by the Royals, O’Connor scored another layup to put the Brook up 12-0.

Port Jeff finally got on the board with 3:10 left in the quarter, but Meyer responded with a three-pointer, a steal, and a fast-break layup to extend the lead, forcing a timeout from Port Jeff. The spurt happened so quickly that it prompted coach Mike Hickey to look up at the scoreboard and ask in disbelief, “Is it really 17-2?” After withstanding the Bears’ surge, the Royals landed a punch of their own, scoring seven straight points to end the quarter down by just 10.

On the Royals’ first possession of the second quarter they drilled a three-pointer to slice their deficit to seven. Just when it felt like the momentum was swinging in their direction, Etienne unleashed a monster block and Colarusso followed with a four-point play, igniting a 12-0 run that all but buried our crosstown rivals. Meyer was the catalyst of the spurt, scoring 4 points and grabbing 3 steals. After a Port Jeff score, O’Connor cashed in on a three-pointer as the lead mushroomed to 34-12; however, the Royals would use another spurt before the close of the half to close to within 16 at intermission. Meyer was the star of the first half, scoring 12 and causing mayhem on defense with 6 steals.

At the start of the second half the Bears quashed any hopes the Royals had of clawing their way back into the game as two Meyer layups, a Kayonga block, and a layup from Colarusso pushed Stony Brook’s advantage back to 42-20 on the way to a 67-44 win for the blue and white.

Meyer netted 18 points alongside 8 steals and 7 assists. Colarusso, the other half of the dynamic duo in the backcourt, also scored 18 and added 2 steals. O’Connor scored 13 points, draining 3 three-pointers, and Etienne had a complete game with 8 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 blocks. But the MVP of the game was AJ, the newest member of the squad who coach Hickey called “our good luck charm” in the post-game huddle. AJ will be a mainstay on the varsity bench this season so be sure to make him feel welcome!

The Bears take the court again next Tuesday at Babylon in a non-league matchup.
