Sailors Take Team Race Championship

One week after winning spring NYISA-SE League Championship, a fleet-style regatta, the Bears laid claim to the NYISA-SE Team Race Championship on Saturday.

Perfect conditions on Port Jefferson Harbor allowed for consistent sailing in the easterly 12-knot winds, and the Bears took advantage. Team race scoring is similar to cross country scoring in that the finishing position of each team’s three boats is tallied together, with the low score winning the race. The Bears swept round one, taking all four races in 1-2-3 position. They nearly repeated the feat in round two but settled for a 1-2-5 finish in the third race, which still gave them the victory.

They finished the day 8-0 overall to claim the title over Mamaroneck (6-2), Rye HS (4-4), Rye Country Day (2-6), and St. John the Baptist (0-8). Skippers Gavin Hudson, Mauro Gonzalez, and Jeremy Lunati led the way and were buoyed by their crew of Joshua Henson, Mairead Reitzel, Amy Li, and Sean Beaver.
