Yesterday afternoon, the boys’ basketball team topped Knox, 51-47, giving them their first season sweep over the Falcons since joining the PSAA in 2018-19. One week earlier, the Bears built an early 9-0 lead in an eventual 51-49 win over their local rivals. Yesterday the Bears enjoyed another quick start, building a 21-11 lead after the opening frame. A pair of Orlando Morris 3-pointers and two buckets apiece from Charlie Onana Awana, Nate Small, and Federico Chiappa paced The Brook.
Threes from Chiappa and Small and seven points from Randolph Logan fueled an 18-13 second frame that gave the Bears a commanding 39-24 advantage at the break. In last Tuesday’s tilt, the Bears held a 16-point advantage midway through the third quarter only to watch it evaporate late in the fourth as Knox ratcheted up their pressure and made some timely shots. Knox again showed their mettle yesterday in a 15-5 third period that left the Bears ahead 44-39 entering the final frame.
The Bears only mustered seven points over the final eight minutes, on a Morris 3-pointer and two scores from Onana Awana, but the Blue & White defense allowed just eight points as the Bears held on for a hard-fought win that improved their PSAA record to 3-1.
Onana Awana led the Bears with 15 points, while Small (10), Morris (9), Chiappa (8), Logan (7), and Osazee Alapa (2) provided balanced scoring. The boys are back in action on Saturday in a non-league match-up at John F. Kennedy High School.
