Yesterday afternoon, the last two unbeaten teams in the PSAA squared off in Swanson Gymnasium with 1st place on the line. From the outset, the Bears established themselves as the new frontrunner in the league, dismantling Staten Island Academy, the reigning PSAA Champions, in a 52-29 romp.
Niamh Scanlon opened the scoring with a putback that gave her 900 career points. She followed that up with a steal and layup before back-to-back 3-pointers from Jocelyn McCrain gave The Brook a 10-0 lead in a blink. Another Scanlon steal and layup forced a Tiger timeout, but it did little to stem the tide as another Scanlon steal and score, a Scarlett Davey floater, and a McCrain coast-to-coast layup gave the Blue & White a commanding 18-2 lead after one.
The Bears expanded their advantage in the second frame behind a pair of buckets from Ava McCormick and eight points from Scanlon, including a fadeaway jumper at the buzzer that gave the Bears a 38-7 halftime edge. The Bears carried a 44-11 lead into the fourth, where McCormick, Davey, and Soraya Carrano finished off the scoring for the Bears.
Scanlon led all scorers with 20 points, while McCrain (12), McCormick (8), Scarlett Davey (4), Myla Lombardo (4), Carrano (2), and Quinn Davey (2) rounded out a balanced attack.
The Bears are back in action on Monday in a rematch at Staten Island Academy.
