Yesterday afternoon, the cross country season wrapped up with the 38th Annual NYSAIS Cross Country Championships, held at the famed Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.

Sophia Dabbraccio capped a sensational debut season with a 19th place finish after covering the 5,000-meter course in 22:31. She was the top eighth-grade finisher in the 164-runner field, and ran to the girls’ highest State Championship individual finish since Margot Rashba took 15th at the 2013 NYSPHSAA Championship. Mia Trama (52nd/24:10), Evelyn Apazidis (71st/24:57), Nikki Quartuccio (86th/25:51), and Yasmin Tinaz (98th/26:35) rounded out the scoring for the Bears who finished 14th out of 19 teams, ahead of Hewitt, Chapin, French American, Portledge, and Harvey.

On the boys’ side, Duncan Kipkoech took 21st in a time of 18:47, the 12th-highest finish for an underclassman in the field of 176. It was the highest individual finish for a boys’ team runner in a State Championship since Riley Corcoran took 8th at NYSAIS in 2019. Zack Xu (50th/19:43), Roger Zhou (112th/22:13), Marc Nichitiu (122nd/22:50), and Jason Qian (125th/22:56) also scored for The Brook, giving them a 13th place finish out of 19 teams, ahead of Portledge, Avenues, Grace Church, Friends Seminary, Trevor Day, and Columbia.
