Bears Sweep Luther in League Opener

Huddle vs. Longwood (PC: Jackson Loo)

On Friday evening, the volleyball team began defense of their five straight undefeated League Championships–the last four coming in the PSAA–with a 3-0 victory over Martin Luther.

The Bears went untested in pushing their own school record for consecutive league wins to 39, with individual set scores of 25-10, 25-4, and 25-8. Niamh Scanlon earned 5 kills and 5 aces, Gillian Bernier recorded 2 kills and 8 aces, Lilly Keegan landed 4 kills and 2 aces, and Ava McCormick served up 4 aces. As a team the Bears racked up 17 kills and 22 aces.

It was also the Bears’ 20th consecutive sweep vs. league opponents, including playoff matches, and their 35th straight victory on the home floor.

Coach Allie Kennedy had this to say about the match:

We took this match as an opportunity to switch up our lineup a bit. Niamh Scanlon is such a powerhouse but is never able to show off her swing since she is our setter. Ava McCormick, our middle, has such great hands, so we decided to switch the girls around.

We had players taking swings from different pins as well. Normally I would not change up a lineup to this degree, but Scanlon’s and McCormick’s athleticism and well-rounded volleyball skills allowed us the chance to experiment.

The Bears are back in action this afternoon at Long Island Lutheran in a rematch of the last two PSAA Championships.
