Last weekend, our dinghy sail team traveled to Rochester for the MASSA Fleet Racing Championships, hosted by the Rochester Yacht Club on Lake Ontario.
On Saturday, the morning began with thunderstorms and heavy rains, which gave way to light rain and a south westerly breeze as racing got underway at 10:00am. The weather held, and blue skies and sun even made an appearance, which allowed 16 races to go off before an afternoon squall chased the boats from the water. The weather on Lake Ontario remained volatile on Sunday morning with a big shifting wind that prompted a course alteration. Two races were completed in each fleet before the winds peaked at 33 knots and racing was called.
In Division A, Steven Hardee, JP Bennett, and Sean Beaver raced to a 5th place finish with 69 points, earning one 1st place and one 2nd place finish in the process. Gavin Hudson, Mairead Reitzel, and Nick Gargiulo combined to finish 2nd in Division B, earning two 1st place finishes and three 3rd place finishes in the process for 41 points. Their combined 110 points earned the team a 4th place finish overall in a field of 18 teams from across the eastern seaboard.
