On Friday night, the boys’ soccer team moved into a tie for second place in the PSAA East Division with a 5-1 win over the Knox School.
Last year the Bears fell behind the Falcons 1-4 before a furious second half comeback gave them a 7-4 win. This time around, The Bears jumped out first when Owen Sobel headed home a Jai Narain throw-in less than six minutes into the match. Sobel put the Bears ahead 2-0 when he hit a free kick through the Knox wall and past the keeper with five minutes remaining in the half. Knox answered with their own spectacular free kick strike to halve their lead before the half.
In the first 20 minutes of the second half, both squads played to a standstill. Mo Romeus, on his birthday no less, finally broke through for the Bears, when he sent home a cheeky free kick pass from Tiger Winston to give the Brook a 3-1 edge. As has been their habit, the Bears quickly followed with another goal when Sobel completed his hat trick with an incredible individual effort. He received a pass from Narain on the Bear side of the midfield line, wove through three defenders and split the final two defenders with a self-pass before hammering an 18-yard shot off the right post and in. Winston sounded the final death knell for the Falcons with 9:52 left when he headed home a rebound off of a Narain strike.
Lael Kutame made five saves in the win.
