This afternoon, the volleyball team swept the Knox School, 3-0, in an early season scrimmage on Long Beach Road.
The Bears raced out to a 16-6 lead in set one, powered by their serve, but Knox reeled off six straight points to energize their crowd and close to within 16-12. A Mercedes Alvarez Herrero kill pushed the lead back to 18-13, but consecutive points pulled Knox within 18-15. The Bears responded with four straight aces from Liz Robbins, and back-to-back kills from Bekah Detwiler and Alvarez Herrero to close out a 7-0 run and give the Bears the opener, 25-15.
The Bears took an early 4-3 lead in set two, an edge they would not relinquish. In fact, they would not trail again the rest of the afternoon. Leslie Kang uncorked four straight aces that pushed the Blue and White advantage to 10-4. A Shannuel Lamptey spike made it 11-5 and consecutive kills from Detwiler and Alvarez Herrero pushed the lead to 19-11, but Knox closed to within 19-14 to resurrect their crowd once again. Lamptey quickly righted the ship with a kill and Robbins slipped a cagey drop shot past the Falcons’ towering blocker for a 21-15 lead. Two more kills from Lamptey, including a rocket into the teeth of Knox’s defense, powered the Bears to a 25-15 win.
The Bears charged out to a 9-1 lead in set three behind three kills from Alvarez Herrero and four aces from Niamh Scanlon, but Knox evened the score at 12-12. The Bears immediately grabbed the lead back with a 5-0 run, punctuated by a pair of Kang aces. Scanlon scored three of the final four points with two aces and a kill to finish off the sweep, 25-15.
The Bears are back in action on Monday in their inaugural PSAA match vs. Our Savior.
