On this day 55 years ago, Tonnie Coane ’59, representing the University of Kansas, won the 880 yard run at the 1st annual Midwest Track & Field Outdoor Championships.

The famed Jim Ryun, who in 1964 became the first high schooler to break the 4-minute mile barrier, took fifth in the event as a 16-year-old representing Wichita East High School.
