
On this day 25 years ago, Will Smith, John Meltzer, Steve Meltzer, and Jean Crousillat reset the Long Island record in the 200 freestyle relay at the New York State qualifying meet held at Sachem High School.
The foursome churned their way to a time of 1:28.65 to break the 27-year-old mark of 1:29.20 set by Plainview in 1966. They also won the 200 medley relay in 1:39.67 to qualify for both relays at the State Championships at the University of Rochester.
Three of the four Bears also qualified for the state meet as individuals as Smith won the 200 freestyle (1:45.38) and finished 2nd in the 100 backstroke (55.44), John Meltzer took 2nd in the 50 freestyle (22.18), and Crousillat 3rd in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.36). Additionally, John Meltzer finished 3rd in the 100 freestyle (49.51).
