The 1943-44 basketball squad
On this day 74 years ago, the basketball team topped Seton Hall, 28-26, in the penultimate game of the year. Here is the recap of the game from Res Gestae 1944:
As our season drew rapidly to a close, the Blue and White court machine engaged Seton Hall. With two regulars out on fouls, the reserves were able to squelch a late spree and come out on top 28-26. Don Drake topped [Phil] Grime for scoring honors with 13 points.
Floyd Johnson’s boys finished 15-3, earning the most wins in a season since the 1937-38 team went 18-2 under Charles Ruffner.
