Bears Pound Knights to Stay Undefeated

December 11, 2017

This afternoon the boys’ basketball team improved to 5-0 on the season in a 79-31 thrashing of Smithtown Christian, the Bears’ 21st consecutive victory in the Holy War series dating back to 1999.

The last match-up between the Bears and Knights came in 2015, a 52-50 senior night thriller. Today’s game held no such drama as the Blue & White built an 8-0 lead in a blink off of four quick layups from Jai Narain, James Toney (2), and Seamus Scanlon. An Owen Sobel fast break layup pushed the lead to 14-4, but a 7-2 run by the Knights pulled them back within seven. Toney closed the quarter with a bucket, giving him 8 points in the 19-10 opening frame.

Toney scored 8 of their Bears’ first 10 points in the second quarter, but the Knights continued to maintain contact with their hustle and tenacity. After Smithtown fell behind by 17 a 7-2 run clipped the Bear lead back to 12, but the Brook closed the half on a 13-4 spurt, highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers from Andy D’Alessio and Antonio Rizzo, that gave the Bears a 42-21 lead at the break.

The Bears’ comfortable lead turned into a blowout in a dominant 25-0 third quarter, powered by a suffocating defense that forced 8 of the Bears’ 20 steals on the game. An unbroken flurry of steals and layups went unanswered during what became a 31-0 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters. The Knights did not score their first points of the second half until 4:45 remaining in the fourth quarter. The second team played most of the second half led by D’Alessio and Jerry Li.

Toney was once again the high scorer for the Bears, netting 22 despite playing in just two-thirds of the game. Sobel (12), D’Alessio (9), Scanlon (8), Narain (8), Li (6), Emil Vaughn (4), Rizzo (4), Rex Eshirow (2), Josh Aduba (2), and Sam Hou (2) rounded out a potent scoring attack.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday at Greenport in a rematch of last year’s County Championship, which the Bears took 49-35 for their 5th straight title.
