Bears Win Portledge Tournament

December 11, 2017

On Sunday morning the boys’ basketball squad topped host Portledge, 67-60, to claim the title in the Panthers’ Tip-Off Tournament. James Toney led the way with a career high 30 points to spur the Bears to a 4-0 start.

Despite the 9:00am start time, the Brook got out of the gates quickly, outscoring Portledge 18-14 in the opening frame behind 7 points from Toney and baskets from Seamus Scanlon, Jai Narain, Owen Sobel and Jerry Li. Scanlon and Emil Vaughn knocked down 3-pointers in the second frame and Toney added another 8 points as the Bears took a 35-24 lead into the break.

The Panther offense began to click in the third quarter as they poured in 23 points to outscore the Bears by 12 and carry a 1-point edge into the final frame. The Bears showed resilience down the stretch, making clutch shots and getting key defensive stops to pull out the win. Narain scored 7 points in the quarter to lead the way.

Toney’s career night was supported by a balanced scoring attack of Seamus Scanlon (11), Narain (9), Vaughn (7), Sobel (4), Colin Scanlon (3), Li (2), and Antonio Rizzo (1).

This was the Bears’ first match-up with the Panthers since the 1991-92 season, a 60-50 victory. Coach Mike Hickey’s teams are 4-0 vs. Portledge over his 29 years as head coach. With the victory the Bears also remain undefeated against Private Schools Athletic Association (PSAA) competition this year adding to the victories in boys’ and girls’ cross country, girls’ volleyball, girls’ tennis, and boys’ soccer.

The Bears are back in action this afternoon in a home match-up with Smithtown Christian at 4:30pm.
