Fans Storm Court After Senior Night Thriller

February 7, 2015

Another day, another thriller in Swanson Gymnasium.

The last two games on our home floor have been decided by 3 total points and our boys gutted out both of them. During last night’s Senior Night, when seniors Robbie Colarusso, Luke Meyer, Hunter Skorobohaty, Erik Holvik, and Josh Agyei-Gyamfi were honored, an incredible crowd roared on the Bears to a thrilling 52-50 Holy War victory to close the regular season.

The five seniors were given the honor of starting the game and played the entirety of the first quarter. Behind the encouragement of the Blue Fan Group, decked head-to-toe in white for a “White Out” theme, the seniors gave the Brook a 15-9 lead after one. They extended the lead in the second, winning the quarter 14-10, to carry a ten-point lead into the half.

Both offenses caught fire in a 16-16 third quarter and the Bears looked to be in control, maintaining their ten-point edge as the fourth quarter began. The gritty Knights fought back to within three points with just 1:49 remaining, but Meyer’s 10-foot floater in the lane sealed the victory for the blue and white. As the final buzzer sounded the euphoria reached a crescendo as the students charged onto the court to celebrate with the team.

Colarusso led all scorers with 19 points. Meyer added 9 points and 7 assists. Luke O’Connor found his stroke last night, connecting on three 3-pointers for 9 points. Jyles Etienne contributed 8 points and 12 rebounds. Agyei-Gyamfi (3 points), Skorobohaty (2 points), and Chester Kayonga (2 points), also got on the board for the Brook.

As well as the seniors played in their last game on the Swanson hardwood, the real MVP may have been the Blue Fan Group. The student section packed the stands and fueled a deafening atmosphere that drowned out the Knights’ fans and cheerleaders from the beginning. The students even put together a faux-ESPN table, complete with a homemade banner. John Desan and Jackson Painter donned headsets and interviewed students and faculty as they came in. The atmosphere was simply electric and has the community excited about the fan support that is being cultivated at the Brook.

The boys closed the regular season with an 11-3 league record to finish second behind the undefeated and #1 New York State Class D ranked Bridgehampton. The Bears have earned the #1 seed in the Suffolk County Class C playoffs and will face the winner of a Pierson/Southold play-in game for the County Championship on Monday, February 16th at 3:00pm. The game will be held at William Floyd High School. See you there!
