If you’ve been around Stony Brook for a while, you may remember seeing a little boy with a mop of blond hair kicking his soccer ball for hours, every day, out on the fields. That kid is now winning games for the boys’ varsity soccer team.

Tiger Winston continued his fantastic first season on the varsity by scoring the game-winner on his first career goal in a key, 4-3 victory over Smithtown Christian. The fearless 8th-grader found the net with just seven minutes remaining to complete a thrilling comeback and give the Brook its fifth consecutive win in the series.

In the first regular season match-up between the two squads, the Knights took a 1-0 lead into halftime before the Bears unleashed a second half barrage to take the 4-1 win. This afternoon the Knights also gained the upper hand early, building a 2-1 lead after the first forty minutes. But just as they had in key moments all season, the Blue and White offense woke up.

The Bears equalized early in the second half, only to fall behind again, 3-2. They still trailed by a goal with less than 15 minutes remaining when David Wadding came through with a huge goal to knot the game, courtesy of a Jai Narain assist. Winston’s heroics followed less than eight minutes later, thanks to a pass from Owen Sobel. The Bears won despite being short-handed with three starters out including starting keeper Sam Han. David Choi returned to his old place between the posts to stop 3 shots in the win.

The other goal scorers for the Bears were Narain and Caleb Spreckels while Winston and Mo Romeus added assists.

With the victory the Bears took another step toward a playoff berth. They need just seven wins to finish .500 in the league and earn the automatic postseason qualifier. Today’s win, including two forfeits from the Ross School which folded its team just before the season, the Bears have six wins with five league games remaining.

The boys are back in action on Friday night in a home match-up with Greenport @ 7:00pm.
