Bears Continue Dominance Over Whalers

Maglione (in action last year) had an assist yesterday (PC: Bruce Jeffrey)

Yesterday afternoon the girls’ soccer team look another step toward a playoff berth with a 3-1 victory over Pierson.

Donna Sanders gave the Brook a 1-0 lead with less than five minutes remaining in the half on an assist from Jessica Nwachukwu. Madison Logan extended the Bear lead nine minutes into the second half thanks to an assist from Caroline Maglione. Pierson halved their deficit in the 64th minute, but Leka Lee-Maeba sealed the victory in the final minute with her 12th goal of the season off of a pass from Beth Felix. Lee-Maeba has been a thorn for Pierson this season, having scored a hat trick against them in a 6-0 win on September 8th. The Bears have not lost to the Whalers since Sept. 27, 2007.

Sophia DiLavore anchored the defense with 8 saves in goal.

The Bears have six wins on the season and are in need of eight in order to finish at least .500 in their league and earn an automatic playoff berth. They have four regular season games remaining, two against teams they have beaten (Smithtown Christian & Port Jeff) and two against teams they have lost to in overtime (Southold & Center Moriches). With less than three weeks to go in the regular season, they are in the driver’s seat to return to the postseason for the first time since 2013, a year in which they won the program’s sixth County Championship in seven years.

The Bears are back in action on Friday evening at Southold/Greenport.
