Sailors Rule New York for 3rd Straight Year

Over Commencement Weekend, the dinghy sail team traveled to Lakewood, NY to defend their State Championships from 2021 and 2022. Last year, despite missing several key members of the crew, the Bears edged Rye Country Day for a thrilling one-point victory. This year’s regatta lacked any such drama as The Brook dominated en route to a State Championship three-peat.

The event began on Saturday, May 20 with a steady 15-knot breeze on Chautauqua Lake. 16 races were completed around rainstorms that temporarily delayed racing. Sunny skies returned on Sunday with 8-10 knot winds out of the northwest that allowed for 16 more races to go off. Out of the 32 total races contested, the Bears earned first-place finishes in 30 of them, including the final 22, to thoroughly trounce the field. They took the runner-up spots in the two races they did not win, giving them an astonishing point total of 34 over the 32 races.

Gavin Hudson, Mairead Reitzel (races 1-8), and Joshua Henson (races 9-16) powered the Division A boat to the top of the field with 17 points. In Division B, Mauro Gonzalez, Henson (races 1-8), and Reitzel (9-16) piloted their way to the top rank, also with 17 points, for a combined team total of 34.
