This afternoon, the depth and heart of the sailing program was on full display as a shorthanded squad valiantly retained the State Championship crown.
Despite missing the services of Steven Hardee and Gavin Hudson, who last weekend helped the Bears earn the first National Championship berth in program history, the Bears came through when it mattered most to edge Rye Country Day School by a single point.
The teams found still waters when they arrived at Oyster Bay’s Waterfront Center at 9:00am. Seven hours later the wind finally cooperated, allowing six races to go off in two divisions between 4:00pm and 6:00pm. The Division A squad of Jeremy Lunati and Sean Beaver earned finishes of 6th, 6th, and 3rd in their three races to accumulate 15 points and nab a 4th place finish.
In Division B, Harry Fredericks and Mairead Reitzel nabbed 4th and 2nd place finishes before setting up a final race in which they needed a 1st place finish to earn the overall victory. The tandem did just that, securing top billing just ahead of Rye Country Day to clinch the team title.
