On a warm and sunny Saturday afternoon, the boys’ and girls’ track and field teams hosted the 33rd Annual PSAA Championships on the Marvin W. Goldberg Track. The boys’ team recaptured the title for the first time since 2021, and numerous athletes on both squads turned in outstanding performances on a memorable day of competition.
Each team crowned eight individual champions and secured both meet MVP awards. Zach Mogambi earned the boys’ meet MVP thanks to three 1st place finishes and a relay gold. He won the discus for the second straight year with a throw of 154′ 3, smashing his own meet record of 139′ 7″ in the process. He topped the field in the shot put with a launch of 52′ 0.5″ to break the meet record of 45′ 4″ set in 1999. He added to that a triple jump gold with a hop, skip, and jump of 39′ 3″ in an event he had not attempted prior to this season. To top off his performance, he anchored the 4×100 relay team to a victory in 45.24.
Lilly Keegan was the Bears’ other top performer. The senior equaled her feat from 2021 of winning three events, taking the 100 hurdles in 16.05 (resetting the meet record of 16.7 set in 2009), the long jump in 15′ 8″, and the high jump in 4′ 10″ for the third straight year. She added to that haul a runner-up in the triple jump (34′ 8.5″).
The other triple winner for the Bears was Duncan Kipkoech, our PSAA Cross Country Champion from the fall, who took the three middle/distance events. The pride of Kenya won the 800 by a wide margin in 2:08.64, outdueled Dalton’s Luke Rostan on the homestretch of the 1600 in 4:36.86, and completed the trifecta with a gold in the 3200 in 10:56.
The Bears had two other individuals win multiple crowns on the afternoon. Evelyn Apazidis was tops in the 800 (2:30.35) and 400 hurdles (70.23), the latter in a near-school record time. Niks Zemitis won the 110 hurdles (17.27) in his first year running the event and the long jump (19′ 6″). Other individual champions for the Bears included Charlie Onana Awana (high jump/5′ 10″), Scarlett Davey (400/60.38), Sam Cox (discus/76′ 4″), and Niamh Scanlon (shot put/26′ 8.25″).
The boys dominated the field events, including three sweeps of the top three places, to run away with the title with 125 points, besting Dalton (64), Long Island Lutheran (43), Portledge (4), and Martin Luther (2). The girls narrowly lost to a tough Dalton team, amassing 105 points to the Tigers’ 116. They bested Long Island Lutheran (22), and Portledge (1).
The Bears now look ahead to the NYSAIS State Championship, which will be held at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island on Wednesday, May 24.
