Bears Throw Combined No-Hitter vs. Baymen

On Tuesday afternoon, the baseball team continued their winning ways with a 10-0 non-league win over Hampton Bays, which featured the eleventh no-hitter in school history.

Matthew Ramirez started for The Brook and used just 11 pitches to retire the side with a ground out and pair of strikeouts. The Bears struck in their half of the 1st when Isaiah Gibbs walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, and dashed home on a Jayden Stroman double. Jojo Franco followed with a ground ball. His hustle forced an error by the third baseman that scored Stroman. Seth Laureano kept the line moving with a single that pushed the Bear advantage to 3-0.

Ramirez used just nine pitches in the 2nd to induce a strikeout and a pair of groundouts to stay perfect through two innings. Gibbs provided some fireworks in the 2nd after Nico Marino doubled and Travis Stroud II reached on a single. On the third pitch of the at bat, Gibbs sent a deep drive to center field that cleared the wall and sent three runs trotting home for a 6-0 lead. Stroman followed with a double, moved to third on an error, and scored on a Franco single. 7-0.

Ramirez retired his seventh straight batter to open the 3rd before an error took away the perfect line. Stroman and Franco erased the mistake on a double play to end the inning. After the Bears went down in order in the bottom half, Justin Rotondi took the mound to open the 4th inning and struck out the first two batters before inducing a ground out to third. A Hampton Bays error gave the Bears an 8-0 advantage in the 4th before Logan Charboneau sent a blast to left for a two-run homer and a 10-0 lead.

With the 10-run mercy rule in effect, the Bears needed a shutout inning in the 5th to end the game. Mateo Lopez came on in relief and opened the frame with a pair of walks, but picked off the man at first to settle down. A strikeout and ground out followed to seal a historic notch in the win column.

The no-hitter was the eleventh for the Blue & White since 1945 and the first since Joe Wozny and T.J. Wachter combined to stymie Waldorf in 2019.
