On Saturday, the dingy sail team won their first regatta of the season by taking first place in a 15-team field at the NYISA-SE SUNY Maritime Invitational. Light and variable winds in the 6-10 knot range created ideal conditions on the East River throughout the morning. The course was reset in the afternoon when the wind changed direction and kicked up to 15-18 knots. Despite the shifty winds and intermittent rain, the Bears were resilient.
Skipper Gavin Hudson and crew Mairead Reitzel (races 1-2, 5-6) and Amy Li (races 3-4) piloted their vessel to finishes of 8th, 1st, 6th, 9th, 9th, and 2nd over their six races for a cumulative total of 35 points and a 4th place finish in Division A.
In Division B, skipper Mauro Gonzalez joined forces with Sean Beaver (races 1-4) and Li (races 5-6) to earn two 1st place and two runner-up finishes, along with 4th and 6th place finishes, to earn 16 points and a first place finish in the division.
The combined point total from Divisions A and B gave the Bears 51 points and a first-place overall finish.
