Yesterday afternoon, the volleyball team traveled to Manhattan where they swept Heschel for the second time in a week by set scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-7.
Here are coach Allie Kennedy’s thoughts on the win:
Heschel’s excitement to play us was evident. I have to hand it to them, they really hustled hard the first two sets. We definitely felt the pressure at first, but were able to pull it together. Gigi [Bernie] really brought back our energy with 10 consecutive aces in a row to kick off the third set–incredible. We had some solid rallies and the girls worked hard. I am so glad we never stopped swinging. I always tell my girls, don’t be afraid to put the ball down. We get out of our rut by swinging away. Ava [McCormick] really produced for us today and led the team with the most kills (12).
The win was the Bears’ 45th straight league victory and 26th sweep in a row vs. PSAA opponents. They are closing in on a sixth consecutive League Championship with a 7-0 record and three matches remaining.
It took a total team effort to put down the gritty Heat. Niamh Scanlon (5 aces, 2 kills, 2 digs), Bernier (11 aces, 7 kills, 1 dig), McCormick (2 aces, 12 kills, 1 block), Ella Middlekauff (2 aces, 1 kill, 1 block), Lilly Keegan (5 kills, 1 dig), Sandy Tao (1 ace), and Georgia Apazidis (1 dig) provided a balanced attack.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow morning in a key PSAA match-up with Long Island Lutheran. A win will secure at least a share of a sixth straight regular season title.
