Kenney after a scrimmage during his freshman season

On this day 22 years ago, Derek Kenney ’98 had 11 saves to lead the University of Virginia men’s lacrosse team to a 15-8 win over Princeton.

The sophomore, who the previous year led the Cavaliers to the National Championship, finished the season with 110 saves while anchoring the 10th best defense in the nation. He was second in the nation in goals against average (7.47) and recorded 12 saves vs. Duke in NCAA Tournament quarterfinals.
