On this day 79 years ago, the basketball team ended Smithtown’s 14-game winning streak, and avenged a one-point loss from Jan. 13, thanks to the late game heroics of Dick Ellis in his final game before being drafted into World War II.
The return game with Smithtown was to be the last for Dick Ellis before being called into the Air Corps. Dick did himself proud by taking the high scoring honors, and sinking the winning and last basket of the game. Up to this point the Smithtown Indians had won 14 straight, but were at last downed 23-21.
