On this day 10 years ago, the boys’ basketball team clipped Greenport, 43-39, thanks to some late game heroics from Jerome Washington.
With the Bears clinging to a one-point lead in the waning seconds, the senior big man snared a loose ball at midcourt, raced up the floor, and finished a layup before drawing a foul with 17 seconds left. Washington converted the free throw to extend the Bear lead to 43-39 and seal a win which paved the way for the first of three consecutive League Championships.
The Porters jumped out to a 10-7 lead after the first quarter before extending their edge to 11 points at the half. The Brook closed to within 28-33 entering the fourth quarter before limiting their hosts to just six points in the final frame while the Bears hung 15. Washington finished a dominant performance with 15 points and 15 rebounds.
