On this day 30 years ago, the boys’ basketball team won a thriller over Mercy.
The Bears led 13-12 after the first quarter, but trailed by three at the half, 25-28. A 21-12 third frame gave the Brook a 46-40 lead heading into the fourth, but the Monarchs carved their deficit back to a single point with seven seconds left and Gerry Doroski at the line for two free throws. He hit the second to knot the game at 53-53 and send the game to overtime.
In the extra period, the teams remained deadlocked at 56-56 in the waning seconds when Adam Fraser knocked down a 12-foot jumper at the buzzer to give the Brook the victory. Fraser finished with 16 points while Matt Mattimore (17 points), Jonas Fischer (13), Jeremy Fischer (7), and Nils Brownworth (5) rounded out the scoring for the Blue and White. Mattimore added five of the Bears’ seven 3-pointers.
