On Friday evening, in the waning light, the girls’ tennis team capped a fourth consecutive undefeated League Championship season with a 4-1 victory over Portledge. Since joining the PSAA in 2018, the Bears have yet to drop a regular season league match as they extended their record to 18-0.
Carina Cristobal continued her dominant play at first singles, winning 6-0, 6-1. Alanna Wu battled back from a 1-4 deficit in the first set to win her second singles match, 7-5, 6-3.
After the Bears dropped the third singles match, the overall result came down to the two doubles matches where each team split the first two sets. With darkness encroaching, both matches utilized a super tiebreaker to ten points in lieu of a third set. Both Stony Brook teams emerged victorious in the taut battles as Ali Cristobal and Isabel Guo (5-7, 6-3, 10-8) and Meghan Creighton and Vida Sandberg (6-4, 2-6, 10-4) pulled out the wins.
The Bears are back on the court on Tuesday as they host the West Division’s second-seeded Staten Island Academy on the home courts at 3:00pm in the PSAA semifinals.
