On Saturday afternoon, the girls’ lacrosse team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 10-9, non-league victory over Poly Prep in the first ever match-up between the two programs.
The Bears trailed for most of the game against their former Ivy Prep League rivals, including a 3-5 halftime deficit, but fought back in the closing moments for a thrilling win. The Brook trailed 8-9 with just over two minutes left when Emily Berger made a huge save before clearing the ball to Ava McCormick who took it all the way in to knot the score at 9-9. The teams remained deadlocked until Morgan Ruggieri beat her defender with a dodge to her left then found the net on a low bounce shot in traffic, providing the winning margin with just 25 seconds remaining. McCormick won the ensuing draw and the Bears were able to kill the clock without event as they escaped Dyker Heights with a win.
Ruggieri led the way with 5 goals on just six shots. McCormick added 3 goals and an assist along with 11 draw controls while Michelle Xuan notched a goal and 3 ground balls. Berger stood tall in net with 14 saves.
The Bears are back in action this afternoon in a PSAA match-up at Staten Island Academy.
