Last weekend, at the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, the dinghy sail team claimed the NYISA-SE Fleet League Championship for the first time since 2010.
The weather was beautiful on Saturday, but the winds did not cooperate as the regatta was pushed to Sunday after just one race. On day two, the Brook turned in a strong performance over their 12 races, led by the A Fleet crew of Steven Hardee and Julia Evans who took 1st place in each of their first five races before claiming 5th in their final run of the day. The B Fleet tandem of Lilly Jette and Isabella Seminario took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in their first three races, before closing their day with three 1st place finishes to nail down the victory.
The result was particularly gratifying as our sailors finally slipped past Rye High School after finishing runner-up to the Garnets in the last two Fall Championships as well as a heart-rending tiebreaker loss in last spring’s New York State Championship. In addition, the victory qualifies the Bears for their first Gold Fleet Championship since 2017 which will be held at St. Mary’s College (MD) on October 19-20 against the best fleets from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland.
