History was made last Saturday in Port Jefferson Harbor as our varsity dinghy team claimed the school’s first ever Mid-Atlantic Scholastic Sailing Association (MASSA) NE League Fall Fleet Racing Championship, the Brook’s 135th league title overall. The sailors bested eight other schools from New York including perennial power St. Ann’s Prep, Mamaroneck, Bellport, Harborfields, Rye, St. Anthony’s, St. John’s, and Bayshore. Captain George Linzee recounted the day’s events:
Sailing four races each in last Saturday’s moderately strong winds, skippers Austin and Hunter Hulse, with their respective crew members Alek Caradonna and Ben Cotten, won the SE New York Interscholastic Sailing Association’s Fall League Fleet Championship. They accomplished this historic first for an SBS team by taking second place in both Division A and B to produce the best combined score of the nine schools that competed at Stony Brook’s sail facility in Port Jeff Harbor. A sweet aspect of this victory was achieving a seven-point margin over St. Ann’s who had tied for 1st place with SBS in a regatta only two weeks ago. The Varsity 1 team now has a guaranteed berth in the six-state MASSA District Championship that will take place in Norfolk, Virginia on October 23-24. The Varsity 2 Team of skippers Anthony Garone and Lawrence Caradonna with crew Ray Maccio and Mario Montoya took first in Division C and second in Division D to produce the best combined score for these two divisions.
