On this day 20 years ago, Liam Banks ’98 notched an assist in Syracuse University’s NCAA Tournament semifinal victory over Georgetown.

6:45 into the second quarter, Banks found Ryan Powell for a score, knotting the game at 4-4. The Hoyas retook the lead 18 seconds later, but it was short-lived as the Orange responded with eight straight goals that left them up 12-5, 4:09 into the fourth quarter, en route to a 13-9 victory.

The Orange went on to lose the National Championship in a 10-12 loss to Virginia as Banks’ Stony Brook teammate, Derek Kenney ’98, made 12 saves for the Cavaliers. One year later, Banks would get a chance to hoist the trophy, leading ‘Cuse to a 13-7 victory over Princeton with 6 goals and an assist to earn Most Outstanding Player honors.
