The ’87 Shrikes

On this day 32 years ago, the baseball team engineered a thrilling comeback in the County Tournament semifinals, topping Southampton 7-6 with three runs in the final inning.

The Shrikes trailed 2-0 through the top of the 4th, but scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the 4th and 5th to take a 4-2 lead. The Mariners bounced back with 2 runs in both the 6th and 7th to retake a 6-4 lead and move within three outs of earning a championship berth.

The Shrikes chipped back within a run in the last of the 7th when Doug Alioth’s two-run single gave the Brook a walk-off win and a trip to the title game. Rob Dambra added 3 RBIs, including a home run, and earned the win on the mound to power the Brook.

Stony Brook went on to win the first County Championship in program history the next day.
