The ’87 Shrikes

On this day 32 years ago, the baseball team engineered a thrilling comeback in the County Tournament semifinals, topping Southampton, 7-6, with three runs in the final inning.

The Shrikes trailed 2-0, but scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the 4th and 5th to take a 4-2 lead. The Mariners bounced back with two runs in both the 6th and 7th to retake a 6-4 lead and move within three outs of earning a championship berth.

The Shrikes chipped back to within a run in the last of the 7th, setting up Doug Alioth’s two-run single which gave the Brook a walk-off win and a trip to the title game. Rob Dambra added 3 RBIs, including a home run, and earned the win on the mound to power the Brook.

Stony Brook went on to win the first County Championship in program history the next day.
