On this day 31 years ago, Mark Whitney ’78 and Andy Whitney ’79 took the top two spots in the Long Island Marathon. Here is the recap from Newsday‘s George Usher:
Whitney Brothers Run 1-2 in LI Marathon
After pacing each other most of the way, Mark broke free of Andy Whitney to win in 2 hours, 30 minutes and 18 seconds at Eisenhower Park. Andy, who lives in Stony Brook, where both were top long distance runners at the Stony Brook School, finished second in 2:31:07. It was his second straight year in that position after losing to Texan Mark Bishop in last year’s marathon. Last year Mark Whitney won the half-marathon, an event in which approximately 6,300 runners finished yesterday. There were approximately 900 finishers in the full marathon.
Mark, who is 27, a year older than Andy, won Newsday‘s half-marathon last year in 1:07:56, slightly better than yesterday’s winning time of 1:08:34 by Bob Giambalvo of Shirley.
