On this day 16 years ago, Caitlin Banks ’00 scored a hat trick as the University of Virginia women’s lacrosse team downed Virginia Tech, 19-3.

Banks and the Cavaliers wasted little time in taking it to the Hokies as the former Bear scored just 22 seconds into the game. Banks’ second score gave Virginia a 7-1 edge at the 10:12 mark and her third a 13-3 lead on the way to the dominant win. She also added an assist on the day.

Banks finished her junior season as the team’s fourth-highest scorer with 37 goals and 20 assists. She scored five hat tricks on the year, including a season-high six goals vs. Vanderbilt, and led the team in shooting percentage at 53%. She was also named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team in leading the Cavaliers to the National Championship game where they fell to Princeton, 7-8, in overtime. One year later they would get their revenge on the Tigers to win the title thanks to 3 goals an assist from Banks.
