This evening, Jyles’ Etienne ’17 earned his first outdoor victory for Indiana, taking the Arizona State Invitational high jump crown with a leap of 6′ 8.75″.
The former Bear cleared 6′ 2.75″, 6′ 4.75″, 6′ 6.75″, and 6′ 8.75″ without incident before bowing out at 6′ 10.75″ with three missed attempts. Arizona State’s Elijah Hughes also went out at 6′ 10.75″, but Etienne earned the title with one less miss at 6′ 6.75″.
The victory was Etienne’s first outdoors as a Hoosier. Last year he took 8th at the Tennessee Relays (6′ 9.5″) and finished top ten at the Florida Relays (6’ 9”) before competing at the Big Ten Championships, but he was hampered by a hamstring injury sustained during the 2017-18 indoor season.
Etienne and the Hoosiers are back in action next weekend as they travel to Gainesville for the Florida Relays.
