G Basketball 1997
The 1996-97 Bears

On this day 22 years ago, the girls’ basketball team clipped Hampton Bays, 42-41, thanks to some last second heroics from Rebecca Fischer and Brie Edwards.

Here is the recap from Newsday:

Rebecca Fischer’s basket with five seconds left off a pass from Brie Edwards lifted Stony Brook to a 42-41 win over Hampton Bays. Sara Kiernan, who scored 10 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter, hit a three-pointer with 1:05 to play to give Stony Brook (2-0) a 40-37 lead, but Kim Venake’s basket and a pair of free throws by Faye Hilbert gave Hampton Bays a 41-40 advantage. Fischer scored eight of her game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter.

The Bears went on to finish 15-3 that season and secure the program’s first of twelve League Championships.
