Yesterday evening, the girls’ basketball team avenged last week’s 18-51 loss to Portledge with a 46-45 victory on the Panthers’ home floor in the semifinals of the Portledge Tip-Off Tournament.
The difference in the rematch was the presence of Beth Felix who missed the Bears’ season opener vs. Portledge. The senior sharpshooter scored a game-high 23 points, connected on five 3-pointers, and added 5 steals to lead the Bears to the comeback victory.
The Panthers took a 12-9 lead after the first quarter, but the Bears closed to within 23-24 at the break. Portledge held a five-point lead heading into the fourth, a margin they maintained with under two minutes left, when the Bears mounted their comeback. A Felix 3-pointer gave the Brook a one-point lead with under a minute left, but Portledge answered with a layup on the ensuing possession to retake command. The Bears still trailed 44-45 with 10 seconds left when Felix drew a foul and connected on both free throws to regain the lead, 46-45. On the Panthers’ final possession Felix blocked the potential game-winning shot as time expired to seal the victory.
Niamh Scanlon scored 13 points (three 3-pointers) while Bekah Detwiler (6 points/ 8 rebounds), Wura Obasanjo (2), and Nadia Hall (2) rounded out the scoring.
With the win, the Bears move to 3-1 on the season. They are back in action on Saturday at noon in the Tip-Off Tournament Championship vs. Our Savior.
