This afternoon, on a brisk and blustery October day, the girls’ soccer team topped Waldorf, 5-2, in the seniors’ final regular season home game.
The 0-0 halftime score did little to prophesy the offensive outburst that awaited in the second half as the Bears and Wolverines combined for seven goals. Donna Sanders finally broke the offensive drought with a goal 13 minutes into the half, courtesy of a Morgan Ruggieri assist. Sanders added a second score 12 minutes later off of a pass from Madison Logan that ignited a combined five goals in just nine minutes of game time.
Waldorf answered one minute later to cut their deficit to 1-2, but Beth Felix (assisted by Sarah Hull) pushed the lead back to two goals two minutes later. Three minutes after Felix’s strike, Waldorf pulled back within a goal at 2-3, but Logan added a goal (assisted by Sanders) three minutes later to stem the tide and cap a furious stretch of soccer. Felix added an unassisted goal with six minutes remaining in the match to end the scoring. Hull (1 save) and Sophia DiLavore (2 saves) ably defended the goal while Alyssa Martinez played her normal role of extinguishing any backfield threat with her speed and tenacity.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow afternoon at Staten Island Academy in their regular season finale. A win will clinch the Bears the #2 seed in the PSAA playoffs next week.
