On this day 20 years ago, the sail team earned a victory at the Mid-Atlantic Scholastic Sailing Association regatta. Here is the account from Newsday:
The Stony Brook School had the leading 420 Class doublehanded sailing dinghy, manned by juniors John Everitt and Sean Penfold, in Division A of the Mid-Atlantic Scholastic Sailing Association regatta Sunday at SUNY-Maritime in Fort Schuyler, beating out Annapolis (MD) High School’s Scott Weller, Sharon McKay, and Julie Mennucli and seven other schools. In Division B, Stony Brook junior Adam Bennett and sophomore Brett Penfold finished third. “This was a honey of an accomplishment,” coach George Linzee said. “We’re starting to break into the upper echelons of scholastic sailing. Our goal is to qualify for the nationals in San Diego next spring.”
