On this day 29 years ago, Andy Whitney ’79 was part of an eight-man team from the New York Athletic Club that won the Ocean to Sound Relay.
In the event, 106 eight-man teams ran a 50-mile course from Wantaugh Park to Mitchel Park along a course that wound through Huntington, Cold Spring Harbor, and Oyster Bay. The team covered the course in 4 hours, 17 minutes and 18 seconds, 1:47 ahead of the second place team, averaging 5:09 per mile with individual legs ranging from 5.2 to 7.7 miles.
The team was comprised of Jim Flynn, Paul Mascali, Don Speranza, Whitney, Luis Ostolozaga, Charles Miers, Marty Ludwikowsky, and Matt Centrowitz, who was a 1976 Olympian and former national record holder in the 5,000 meters.
Four hours, 17 minutes and 18 seconds after NYAC lead-off runner Paul Mascali had sprinted out of the parking lot at Wantagh Park – Centrowitz crossed the finish line. His NYAC teammates, some of whom had finished their legs hours earlier, rushed over to greet him.
