This afternoon, in the first playoff match in girls’ badminton history, the #6 Bears overcame a 2-4 deficit by winning the final three matches of a 5-4 win over #7 Northport.

Mary Wang won her #1 singles match (11-4, 11-4) and Ariel Wang and Sophie Cai took their #2 doubles match (15-13, 15-1), but the Bears dropped #4 singles, #5 singles, #1 doubles, and #4 doubles to fall behind the Tigers, 2-4.

With their season on the line, reinforcements, fresh from the AP Euro exam, came in the form of Masha Volovaya, Judy Liu, Lily Zhang, and Ella Liu. Volovaya (11-3, 11-0) and Judy Liu (11-4, 11-3) cruised in their #2 and #3 singles matches to knot the match at 4-4, leaving the #3 doubles match as the decider. With all eyes on Zhang and Ella Liu, the tandem came through with a 15-11, 15-5 victory to send the Brook into the Suffolk County semifinals.

The Bears move on to face top-seeded Commack on Thursday afternoon at Half Hollow Hills East HS. The third-seeded boys’ team matches up with #2 Commack, also on Thursday afternoon at Hills East.
