This morning, a shorthanded boys’ tennis squad clipped Sachem, 4-3, to finish the regular season with an 8-2 record in League V, good enough for second place behind undefeated Ward Melville. 8-2 is also the best record they have ever achieved in the perennially difficult League V.

The Bears swept the four singles matches behind great performances from Steven Ou (6-3, 6-4), Wensan Yin (6-3, 3-6, 5-2 (retired)), Jake Macaspac (6-0, 6-0), and Pratik Harjani (6-0, 6-1).

Special recognition needs to go to Mac Nichitiu, James Fu, John Zhou, Howard Fung, and Michael Cao, who stepped up from the junior varsity to fill in for several absent varsity players. Coach Joe Arias lauded the group, saying, “These JV players showed up early, played their best and showed nothing but courage and dedication to their role on the team in spite of the adversity. If it were not for them who came and stood for the team knowing it was going to be tough, we would have defaulted and not have had a chance to win.”

The boys move on to the individual and team playoffs. The individual Division Championships begin next week.
