Metz in the 1998 County Championship
On this day 21 years ago, the boys’ lacrosse team topped Harborfields, 9-7. Here is the recap from Newsday:
Metz, Hanchett Lift Stony Brook to Win
Sean Metz scored on a pass from Charlie Hanchett with 1:29 left in the game to break a tie at 7 as Stony Brook scored the last five goals of the game to rally for a 9-7 win over Harborfields yesterday in a Division II boys lacrosse game. Stony Brook goalie Derek Kenney began the play that resulted in the game-winner when he stripped the ball from a Harborfields attackman and fed Metz, who worked a give-and-go with Hanchett. Hanchett scored on a pass from Liam Banks with 19 seconds left to seal the victory. “They played a great tempo and did an outstanding job of preparing for us,” Stony Brook coach John Kenney said, adding that the tide began to turn when “our defense began to play a little more cohesively.” Kenney had 11 saves.
Banks finished with 3 goals while Hanchett (2), Metz (2), Jim Stanek (1), and Jay Miaritis (1) rounded out the scoring for the Brook. The Bears would go on to win a second of four straight Division Championships with a 14-4 record.
