On this day 18 years ago, Derek Kenney ’98 led the University of Virginia to a 16-8 victory over #7 Johns Hopkins in a meeting between two of the nation’s top ten teams.

Before a crowd of 3,428 in Charlottesville, the former Bear powered the Cavalier defense with 10 saves as the nation’s second-ranked team improved to 4-1 on the season.

Virginia would go on to win a 14th ACC Championship later that season. One week later, Kenney’s 12 saves vs. Duke in the NCAA Quarterfinals led UVA to a 10-9 win and a second straight trip to the Final Four where they fell to Derek’s brother, Jake ’96, and his Princeton squad.

Derek closed the season with 110 saves and anchored the 10th best defense in the nation. He was second in the nation in goals against average with 7.47.
