Yesterday afternoon, the boys’ and girls’ badminton teams topped Patchogue-Medford in their home openers to improve to 2-0 on the season. Today’s match scores mirrored those registered by both teams in their two wins over Pat-Med last year.
The boys swept the raiders, 9-0, in dominant fashion, failing to drop a single game in each of their nine matches. Jerry Liu (15-2, 15-2), Tony Yu (15-6, 15-8), Kevin Zhang (15-0, 15-3), Ulysses Zhang (15-3, 15-9), and David Wang (15-0, 15-1) rolled through their singles matches while the tandems of Jack Yu and Caleb Spreckels (15-6, 15-2), Ian Liu and David Chen (15-5, 15-7), Sam Han and Sam Wong (15-12, 15-6), and Bobby Wu and Ben Sray (15-1, 15-5) took care of business in doubles.
The girls won a decidedly closer match, 5-4, on the back of some great singles play. Mary Wang (11-8, 11-0), Judy Liu (11-8, 11-1), Ariel Wang (9-11, 11-5, 11-3), and Nancy Man (11-0, 11-3) took four of the five singles matches while Melody Li and Leslie Kang joined forces to win their first doubles match, 15-5, 15-11, to give the Bears the margin they needed.
The teams are back on the court on Monday in a match-up at Miller Place.
