Tennis Tops Bay Shore in Opener

Gicquel in action last year (PC: Bruce Jeffrey)
On a frigid Friday afternoon that saw feel temperatures dip into the low 30s, the boys’ tennis team opened the season with a 5-2 non-league win over Bay Shore. The Bears showed tremendous toughness as four of their five match wins came in three sets.
Brandon Gicquel epitomized the grit the Bears showed against a quality opponent in less than ideal conditions. The sophomore first singles player fell 2-6 in the first set, but battled back 6-2, 6-3 in the next two sets to win the match. Steven Ou (Ret.) and Wensan Yin (6-2, 3-6, 6-4) earned wins at second and third singles, respectively.
The tandem of Jovan Haynes and Pratik Harjani earned a tough second doubles victory with a third set tiebreaker, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), while the third doubles team of Alan Wang and Andy Liu finished off the Marauders with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win.
Next up for the Bears is a match-up at Ward Melville this afternoon.
